Christmas Around the World

Watch the video I made with Deven explaining all these resources.

I am about to throw a LOT of info at you but remember we do not do ALL of these at one time, but have done them OVER time. See where you are in age, in interests, in other studies, in your house….and go from there.

Christmas Printables

Justin with map

This is just a small handful of what you can find on sites like
Teachers Pay Teachers and Pinterest. TpT is great because you can break it down by grades and the amount you are willing to pay.

FREE is an option! We used the writing prompts one with our map and dry erase markers to draw lines from the country to the
writing prompt!

Unit Studies

Unit studies are going to be a combination of several of the resources here.

This can be great, or overwhelming. If you are looking for something you don’t have to put a lot of effort into and gives you all the things you need these are great.

There are also MANY of these to find on this topic. Pinterest is going to be your quickest search option for these.

Books

Check your library for these! Also the Hoopla app and youtube read-a-long videos!

World Market/Universal Yums/Cooking

Canada Box

Food is often the way to connect a concept for kids. These three options for learning about Christmas around the world and/or in other countries at Christmas.

World Market

World Market will have many countries on your list. You can search their website by country, but I also recommend going to the store. The info is on the back of the food packaging. I chose a country for each kid and created a box of goodies. That year the countries were based on their likes, this year will be based on ancestry.

Universal Yums

Universal Yums is a great option if you're not particular about which countries you get. As of right now you can still order the holiday box and get it back by Christmas, but it looks like the largest option ($35) is sold out. We had a subscription to them for a year so and really loved learning with it.

Cookbook

Hip Homeschool moms is offering this FREE Christmas Around the World cookbook! We downloaded it and they have some great stuff. We can’t wait to try some of these. This is a win on so many levels. While learning about Christmas traditions and geography they are also earning a life skill and probably trying food they wouldn't normally be interested in!

Virtual Christmas

Virtual Tour Screen

I know many of you are tired of all things virtual this year but with the cost of travel even in regular times going virtual around the world is a great option. You can roam the vendors and then recreate in your house!

Take your own vendor stalls out of tri-folds, grab a few recipes from the book and/or store above, and have your own international Christmas market! Some of these tours are just 360 views and some are Google Earth walk-throughs!

Music

Keeping in mind that we have “grandma got run over by a reindeer” and some of these songs won’t seem quite as odd.

Kids LOVE to dance and sing so attaching a musical memory to their geography lessons is bound to make them stick in new ways! Hearing the soundtrack that plays through other countries during the holidays makes it that much more real.

Genealogy

Christmas Around the World

This year in our house we are focusing on ancestry in our U.S. History and our geography. To that end, for this Christmas, we are researching Christmas traditions that our ancestors may have participated in. One of those are putz villages from Germany. We still have one of these in our family that my grandpa remembered from his childhood.

I had my DNA done through Ancestry and so we will be doing our Christmas country food boxes focused on these regions. We also set up our own putz village and are looking into other traditions to incorporate.

This is a great way to make the geography and traditions real for kids and for them to learn more about the people and places they came from.

Extras

These are just some fun extra links on this topic that I came across and wanted to share with you.

These are just starting points.

You will find more printables, unit studies, books, music, and more, but this should give you a good jumping-off point!

I hope you will have fun with these ideas and remember what I said when I started. No one is doing all of these things at one time. Find what works for where you are in your homeschool journal.

Most importantly…have FUN with this!
