Alabama Homeschool Authors

Celebrating homeschool graduates, parents, and students from Alabama who’ve published their own works — from children’s books to fantasy adventures and historical fiction.

Each of these authors reminds us that storytelling is a powerful extension of home education, creativity, and perseverance.

Alyson Jensen – The Pure Line Series

After graduating from homeschool, Alyson Jensen launched her Christian fiction series for teens: The Pure Line. The first book, Chained (March 2021), and its sequel, Trapped (September 2021), are filled with epic battles, humor, and faith-based lessons.

Her mission: “See the spiritual battle, fight the real enemy, and conquer through Christ.”

Living on a farm in south Alabama with her parents and seven siblings, Alyson writes between caring for animals and spending time with family.

Taydem Lindquist – Growing Up Wild

At just 14 years old, Taydem published his first book, Growing Up Wild! The third of ten children, Taydem is known for his adventurous, mission-minded spirit — a barefoot, Jesus-loving explorer who dreams of serving God on the mission field.

This project began as a 9th-grade English assignment and grew into a lesson in perseverance. With his family’s support, Taydem learned that the hardest challenges often produce the most beautiful results.

Emma G. McKee – Illuminate the Dark: Stories of Light over Darkness

We’re thrilled to celebrate homeschool author Emma G. McKee, whose short story “The White Stag” was published in the anthology Illuminate the Dark (February 2025).

Emma has also launched her own website and is preparing to release her debut book soon! Even more inspiring, proceeds from Illuminate the Dark are being donated to BeLoved Asheville for Hurricane Helene relief.

Erich O. Wildgrube IV – The Empress and the Archer

An Alabama homeschool graduate, Erich Wildgrube’s debut fantasy novel The Empress’ Quest follows Leeta, an empress-to-be who must reclaim her kingdom from invading druids and goblin forces. Joined by an aging general, a rogue, and a mysterious traveler, Leeta faces danger and destiny in the world of Velicorte.

Despite early struggles with dyslexia, Erich’s love of storytelling — inspired by Tolkien, Lewis, and Brooks — led him to create this immersive adventure. He now lives in North Carolina with his wife and continues to write fantasy rooted in faith and perseverance.

Becky Zingale & Chloe Zingale – Wonderfully Me Books

Becky and her daughter Chloe are the team behind Wonderfully Me Books, a children’s series that celebrates differences and promotes inclusion.

Their first title, Becoming a Super Sibling, is told through Chloe’s eyes — helping young readers understand facial differences, cleft palate, hearing loss, and the beauty of helping a sibling with medical needs.

Becky also authored Wonderfully Different, Wonderfully Me, inspired by her family’s real-life experiences with Bone Anchored Hearing Aids and facial differences. Featured on the Born Different show (1.5M+ views), the Zingale family shares a message of compassion and confidence for all children.

The Sweet Potato Bill – A Homeschool Civic Success Story

The Alabama homeschool community was thrilled — and extremely proud — of Kristin Cafagno Smith’s homeschool group, which turned a simple question into a statewide achievement.

During the Alabama200 celebrations, these students discovered that Alabama didn’t have a state vegetable. Through research, collaboration, and a lot of determination, they drafted a proposal, gained legislative sponsors, and saw their bill pass through both chambers of the Alabama Legislature.

In 2021, Governor Kay Ivey signed the bill into law, officially naming the sweet potato as Alabama’s state vegetable — with a special mention of the homeschool group written directly into the bill.

What an incredible hands-on civics lesson — and a powerful reminder that homeschoolers can make a real difference in their government!

Lights, Camera, Homeschool!

Homeschoolers across Alabama have been stepping into the spotlight — literally! From independent films to major motion pictures, homeschool families have had the unique opportunity to work as extras on movie sets, learning first-hand about the filmmaking process while representing the homeschool community with professionalism and enthusiasm.

Here Comes Rusty
Here Comes Rusty

2015 – Here Comes Rusty

In 2015, homeschool families in the Mobile area had a unique opportunity to appear as extras when the independent film Here Comes Rusty filmed scenes at Dreamland Skate Center.

The project offered students a first-hand look at how movie productions operate — from set design to filming logistics — right in their own community.

🎬 Note: Here Comes Rusty is a quirky, PG-13-rated comedy intended for adult audiences. While not a children’s film, it provided a valuable behind-the-scenes learning experience for local homeschoolers interested in film production.

I Still Believe

2019 – I Still Believe

A major milestone came in 2019 when the Erwin Brothers — creators of Mom’s Night Out and I Can Only Imagine — brought their next big film, I Still Believe, to Mobile.

Having worked extensively with homeschool communities in Birmingham, the filmmakers reached out specifically to South Alabama homeschool families to fill large crowd scenes and background roles.

Filming took place between May 20th and June 28th, 2019, with homeschoolers of all ages participating in key scenes throughout production.

This experience offered students a front-row seat to the creative process, showing them what it takes to bring a major motion picture to life — and proving once again that homeschoolers are adaptable, reliable, and eager to learn!

2019 – This Is the Year

That same year, another exciting production filmed in Mobile — This Is the Year, a coming-of-age adventure directed by Disney Channel alum David Henrie and executive-produced by Selena Gomez.

The movie follows a group of high school friends on one last road trip to a music festival, capturing themes of friendship, courage, and self-discovery. It featured scenes filmed across the Mobile area, giving locals — including several homeschool families — a behind-the-scenes look at what goes into bringing a Hollywood story to life right here at home.

For many students, this was their first experience on a professional film set, offering valuable insight into the creative collaboration that happens both in front of and behind the camera.

2022 – Jesus Revolution

In 2022, Hollywood came calling again — and Alabama homeschoolers answered!

The producers of I Can Only Imagine and I Still Believe returned to Mobile to film Jesus Revolution, an inspiring true story based on the lives of Greg and Cathe Laurie during the 1960s Jesus Movement.

Once again, the production team specifically reached out to the homeschool community for extras — including teens, families, and adults — praising their past experiences working with homeschoolers on previous films.

The film stars Joel Courtney, Kelsey Grammer, and Jonathan Roumie (of The Chosen), and many Alabama homeschoolers appeared in crowd scenes throughout the movie.

Jesus Revolution highlights one of the greatest spiritual awakenings in modern American history — and how amazing that homeschoolers got to be part of telling that story!

The Erwin Brothers

The Erwin Brothers – Homeschool Roots in Film

Jon and Andrew Erwin, the award-winning filmmakers behind I Can Only Imagine, I Still Believe, and Jesus Revolution, both grew up as homeschoolers in Birmingham, Alabama.

Their homeschool upbringing gave them the freedom to explore creativity, storytelling, and visual media from a young age—skills that would one day help them shape an entire genre of inspirational films.

When filming in Alabama, the Erwin Brothers have intentionally reached out to the local homeschool community for extras and volunteers, recognizing homeschool families as reliable, flexible, and enthusiastic participants. Many Alabama homeschoolers have since appeared in their films, gaining first-hand experience on professional sets while helping tell stories that reflect faith, hope, and purpose.

It’s a powerful full-circle moment—homeschoolers who once learned outside the traditional classroom are now creating opportunities for the next generation to step onto the big screen.

💡 Why It Matters
Participating as extras gives homeschoolers a behind-the-scenes look at storytelling, production, and teamwork — and it’s an unforgettable educational experience. From wardrobe to lighting to directing, students see how art, communication, and logistics all come together to create something meaningful.

We love seeing homeschoolers on screen — learning, growing, and representing Alabama with pride!
